Opinions on potential periodic competition idea...

    Broken English is fine. Remember you don't technically even have to use words in games. Titles such as Machinarium, Gomo, Sims etc use speech bubbles with images &/or unintelligible nonsense words (aka babbling or murmuring) to get their point across. wink

    I remember you want one dialogue at least.
    But the biggest reason is to make the whole game in English. I build my games in German, so I have to translate all stuff later. But I'm thinking about it.
    btw: speech bubbles are fine, but they doesn't work in Visionaire, right? I wanted to make some, but I don't know how.

    Yeah speech bubbles are possible. You can add them inside of an interface, but you could if only using speech bubbles include them in your characters talk animations & just select which animation or frames of an animation to display as needed.

    The thing in the document about 1 dialog is an example of what a competitions rules could look like. The competition would not be a one off thing but something that occurs regularly (like episodes of a tv show).

    9 submissions on the form so far. Need MORE!,a lot more.

    Anyway... have been thinking about the prizes. I think I would set it up like this:

    * top tier (games worth over €20)
    * medium tier (games worth over €5 & less than €20)
    * bottom tier (bargain bin games worth less than €5)

    Quick note: price would be based on actual store price on steam, not current discount price or price of purchase if bought from a key site as an individual product or part of a bundle.

    As for winning submission to competition & 2 runners up I think something along the lines of this would be ok:

    * winner: choice of 1 high tier game, or 2 medium tier games, or 5 bottom tier games.

    * runner up #1: choice of 1 medium tier game or 3 bottom tier games.

    * runner up #2: choice of 2 bottom tier games.

    What do you guys think?

    many questions came up. how to motivate people to contribute something to the community. what about other types of awards..

    Mostly creating games should be just for fun, but wouldn´t it be nice to help newer games get exposure in a hall of fame?
    What about a pointsystem with ranks/badges etc.? I know this means restructuring the forum. but gamification is everywhere. people love it smile

    I believe Thomas is working on a new forum, but I don't have any details on it. Sorry.

    I agree that it would be nice to review stuff & get badges / achievements based on your contribution to the community. We used to do the same thing on my old music forum. I had a really nice review & rating system custom coded into the CMS I used by a friend - actually he made 3 systems for the forum as I wanted to separate WIP tracks, from finished tracks & tracks from mixes. All in all it worked great.

    As for Steam... although I might not agree with DRM bollox (steam has everyone by the balls) I still prefer it over other services as the games are often cheap on Steam because there's always some sale or special on each week & then massive sale every few months or so. Also they have trading cards & the market system which is good for people like me that don't care about collecting cards or leveling up as we get to sell unwanted cards on the market to idiots ( grin ) & then take the money that gets added to steam wallet (shame it can't be transferred to paypal) & use it to purchase games we want.

    They also have the achievement system for achievement hunters & badge collecting for other collectors. Hell there's people on there that just collect games for the sake of collecting them - pretty mad.

    Anyway, yeah... seem to have gotten a wee bit off topic here, but it's all good. wink

    In regards to the competition stuff, it's not really to do with VS. It's just something I was thinking about a while back. MAGS itself works without the promise of prizes because they have a massive & very active community, so there will always be people that will enter their monthly competitions. We on the other hand, lack the community. We have a few core dedicated members, but mostly people that pass through or just check in from time to time.

    Filled it out! I think this would be a pretty fun idea. Might be a good break from working on my main game, and all around a great learning experience too!
